Welcome to the San Diego Kendo Club

The San Diego Kendo Club offers courses in kendo and provides kendo practice to male and female, and youths of all races regardless of religion or national origin. We approach kendo as a form of budo that aims to train the mind and body, and cultivate character through sustained training in Japanese sword techniques.

Although we acknowledge the fact that kendo is seen by some as a sport of martial arts where kendo matches (shiai) are fought. We practice kendo as a form of budo that train the mind and body, and cultivate character and respect for each other.

In addition, we are making a contribution to our community’s culture and fitness well-being. The San Diego Kendo Club also is associated with The University of Utah Kendo Club. If you are in Utah, please contact Dr. Lou Barrows at (801)-581-4547.

Beginners

We try to make visitors welcome. Beginners must first watch a kendo session then ask any questions that they may have. Hosak sensei and Mr. Bob Rogers will answer your questions. Youths and adults can learn kendo safely. The benefits from kendo and its component of body and mind exercises are good health and discipline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to buy equipment before I start kendo classes?

Answer: No, you need to wear loose fitting clothes such as sweats, track suit, an aikido or judo or karate uniform. Also, you should not wear any jewelry or watch.

The club will lend you a shinai (Bamboo sword). But after a few practices, you will need to get your own shinai and consider buying the kendo uniform: kendogi and hakama.

You will not be allowed to wear the armor and participate general keiko practice until you have successfully completed the beginners course and training.
