What
is Kendo?
Kendo is a form of budo that aims to train the mind and body and cultivate
character through sustained training in Japanese sword techniques, principally
with a shinai. Kendo was devised as a martial art and a sport, fifty years
ago, in Japan. Kendo is promoted worldwide through the International Kendo
Federation (IKF) to people of all races regardless of cultures and national
origins.
Male and female of all ages including children practice kendo.
The practice of kendo involves using an appropriate shinai, kendo-gi,
and kendo-bu (protective equipment). It also involves aerobic and anaerobic
exercises, and training of the mind.
The contents of kendo
training make up the essential forms of knowledge in a quality physical
education program, or a health science program for colleges and universities.
An introductory book, "KENDO The definitive guide" by Hiroshi
Ozawa is a good starting point to learn about kendo. You can obtain this
