Kendo 202 Course Description

Dr. Ken Lorimer

The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the art of kendo, and to provide an opportunity for people of all cultures and ethnic origins in our community to practice kendo. Besides promoting learning and understanding through physical activity, students are expected to read the recommended book and other kendo books relating to the fundamentals and philosophy of kendo. This course also is intended to make a contribution to our local community fitness and public health solution.

• Junbi-undo (warm up exercise)
• Aerobic, calisthenics, and anaerobic, exercises and flexibility
• Kendo-Rei-Ho: etiquette, and manners that express respect
• Basic posture, kamae, swing, furi-kaburu, and suburi.
• Son-kyo, the squatting postures.
• Kendo Kata
• Essentials of kirikaeshi
• A-she-sabeke (footwork)
• Three Ma-ai (distance between two opponents)
• Ki-hon
• Way of keiko. Full contact practice with shinai for intermediate and advanced kendoists.
